Horse riding trails - see the Drakensberg mountains from horseback.
Horse riding trails on our surefooted horses and ponies are just one of the 'things to do' at the Rolling M Ranch in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains.

We are very proud of our reputation both as far as our trails and horses are concerned. We use western (cowboy) saddles for comfort and novices are given assistance and advice so that they are loping along in no time at all.

Experienced riders will marvel at the responsiveness and willingness of the horses.

Horse riding trail routes

Our routes are varied - some cross the mighty Tugela River, others climb to the top of the ridge to the ruin of the sangoma (witch doctor) Mathlalo's kraal.

Our Anglo Boer war battlefield trails visit the scenes of the battles of Vaalkrans and Spioenkop. Qualified battlefield guides are available for detailed recounting if desired.

The terrain for the horse riding trails is varied with gentle strolls through the bush and invigorating lopes across the plains and exciting river crossings.

We have 30 trail horses available, but prefer to limit our groups to 15 riders. Weight limit is 95kg - unless by special arrangement. Horse riding holidays are tailored to the requirements of the group and the accommodation on the ranch is unique.

Catering is to a high standard and the hospitality of Mike is something to be remembered.

Every season is perfect for horse riding - early morning or evening rides to escape the heat in summer; the glory of the trails through the groves of fiery coloured aloes in fall; crisp, misty winter mornings with balmy sunny days in winter and the magical awakening of spring.

Horse riding weekend
On Friday - arrive in the afternoon and you'll have a chance to settle in followed by tea. After taking a leisurely stroll along the bank of the Tugela River you'll be dining under the African stars (weather permitting).

On Saturday you'll be served with a hearty breakfast before riding out on the magnificent terrain that Rolling M Ranch has to offer. Lunch is served on route (minimum 6 people required) and, if you like, tubes can be organized to journey down the river back to Ukuthula. A well deserved supper is barbecued over a bonfire where stories are exchanged, friendships renewed and a humming atmosphere fills the air.

Sunday morning begins with a light breakfast this is followed by a ride to the ruins of Sangoma Mathlalo where you will be able to recount the stories of sacrifice and witchcraft. Brunch is served before departure.
